The marine biology laboratory of Museum and College de France is located in Concarneau, on the south coast of Finistere not far from the Glenan islands and in the middle of a unique series of highly productive marine estuaries. By itself, the fishery harbour of Concarneau gives to the scientists an access to a large and diverse area of exploited marine areas. |
Two main projects are developped at the marine station of Concarneau:
The marine station is also a teaching institute for graduate and post graduate students as well as for field training of students from various european universities.
On part of the station is open to visitors: the MARINARIUM aims to explain the sea . Open from april to september. Groups are welcomed all around the year (Contact : Annie PERON)
Amateur divers are also associated to the scientific work at the station. Trained to various biology disciplines by the Association for the Discovery of the Marine World (ADMS) the are participating to several programmes of suvey of marine fauna and flora on the coasts of Brittany (Contact : Annie Girard)
The marine biology station of Concarneau which was founded by the Collge de France in 1859 is the oldest marine laboratory in the world. Dedicated originally to the rearing of marine animals, the station became rapidly a very active scientific center. Techniques for growing flat fishes (Dover sole) have been set up here at the end of the last century and the founding experiments of embryology have been conducted here by Chabry (1887). Roche characterized the thyroid hormone in the 50s . In the domain of prhistoric archeology, the most developped of identification of fish remains is based on the system of DESSE in 1970. |
